Starting in mid-19th century merchants began using wall advertisements to capture the attention of potential buyers. The use of exposed walls for advertisements exploded in the early 20th century, as mass transit and automobiles begin to traversed "Main Street." Advertisements were placed on walls where passing potential buyers could see and comprehend the pitch in the few seconds of their passing. The brick wall became the prime urban, outdoor advertising media. Tobacco companies, such as Bull Durham, Mail Pouch, and Henry George, were among the early and most aggressive wall advertisers. As more women entered the workforce, food manufacturers such as the Washburn-Crosby Company--makers of Gold Metal Flour, and Occident Flour; using slogans such as "Eventually, Why Not Now?' and "Cost More--Worth It" hawked their products. Coca Cola ads, promising to "relieve fatigue" were ubiquitous, backing the claimed "sold everywhere." Many wall advertisements were lost through "urban renewal and revival." But, there are some that continue to seek our attention. Some are faded and barely visiable. Others, have been repainted over the years. However, few of us notice wall advertisements because of the tangle of messages that now compete for our attention.
