At auction: Pair of Bell Metal and Iron Belted Lemon-top Andirons and Two Tools, attributed to John Molineaux, Boston, late 18th century, the belted lemon tops raised on columnar shafts on cabriole legs with slipper feet, with conforming lemon-topped log stops, shovel, and tongs, ht. 18 3/4, wd. 12, dp. 22 in. Provenance: Hosmer family, Concord, Massachusetts, to the consignor.

A pair of Federal period 'lemon-top' andirons with matching log stops and with matching tools. Probably Boston, c.1790-1800. 17" ht., 20" deep.

CLC I used to have two pairs. One I purchased in Essex and the other from my aunt. She said in the olden days, folks would unscrew the top and hide $ in there :)
