Mandi {Life...Your Way} Hmm, wasn't thinking of teaching place value...just showing her how to add one column at a time. No?

Profile picture of Christine Yazzie

Christine Yazzie I've been teaching double-digit addition for 2 weeks with place value. Lot's of confused kids. Then I showed them this--they got it. Go figure. So yes, they do need to learn the "why." But sometimes, they just need a simplified visual.

Mandi {Life...Your Way} Thanks, Christine!

Santhi K @Christine, any ideas on how to help children with regrouping of tens/ hundreds with addition and especially subtraction?

Profile picture of Mary B

Mary B I'll chime in on behalf of keeping the concept of place value in addition (and multiplication!) lessons. 30 and 10 make 40 (rather than 3+1=4). 6 and 2 make 8. 48. As Christine said, the traditional algorithm works just fine for some kids. My preference, however, is using place value. One benefit is the transfer into children's ability to do "mental" addition (doesn't rely on lining up columns, but relies instead on the actual *value* of the digits). I will also add that one way my students -- and my own children -- have been successful is to work from left to right. It's counter to what I learned in school, but for those that learn that way, mental calculations are easy. It's very helpful with "carrying." So 58+14 is essentially 50 +10= 60; 8 and 4=12. 60+12=72. Each kid connects with procedures in different ways, and it's good to have a full "tool kit" of methods.

Great way to teach nouns- each student gets a popsicle stick with a sentence on it and they have to identify the noun. Chart all of the nouns under the different categories & from there identify all of the proper nouns.

This is a seriously fun way to learn the locations of countries, capitals, landmarks and more. With levels, time limits, and even proximity readouts, this game will make your students approach geography in a whole new way.
