Setting priorities for homeschooling. (note: I find the gendering of kids to explain their abilities in this article (ie boys can't sit still) very annoying, but there are some valuable things here.)

Fetching pins…
Danielle LeBrun I have nothing against homeschooling and will defend any parents right to do so. But I hate comparisons like this because its such an insult to the majority of educators who have dedicated their lives to making sure every child has access to an education. Public, private, charter, or homeschool--we should celebrate that parents have options, instead of try to demonize.
Nalaya Oddly The truth is that the system is failing and it is our children who are losing. Good teachers are undermined on a regular basis by the system that runs it. I encounter this issue on a regular basis with my children's schools.
Lillitu Shahar Kunning Hey Danielle. I didn't mean it as a slap in the face. I was a public school teacher and know first hand how bureaucracy and lack of commitment (from the public, from the government, from the administration) is harming our schools. Teaching is a HARD JOB, whether you do it for your own kids or a classroom. I have to say, most of the rules in schools that I observed as a teacher enforced conformity and rule following for its own sake. It bummed me out. There was very little wiggle room for creativity and helping kids where they were at when/where I taught. I hope to do better for my son through homeschooling.
