“It’s really fickle, but we pretty much know what it needs now to get it good,” says Andrew Shield. “Those are the best barrels I’ve shot in Australia for sure—as good as P-Pass. It’s difficult to get out there when it’s solid because the trip out is so rough, so whenever it’s solid you can pretty much guarantee having it to yourself.” Dean Brady, having his cake and eating it too. “It’s a pretty cool experience heading out to sea, not knowing where you are, with no land to be seen but knowing there’s potentially amazing waves where you’re headed,” says Dean Brady of their boat ride over the world’s largest coral reef. “Eventually we spotted some white wash on the horizon and we moved to the front of the boat to catch our first glimpse. It took another hour until we could properly see the wave. When we did, we saw two absolutely perfect 6-footers rifling down the reef.” Photo: Shield
