Barbie Can Do Anything

Barbie has achieved every goal she has ever set for herself: going to college, playing on sports teams, becoming a doctor, lawyer, teacher, astronaut, paleontologist, ambassador, photographer, movie star, Army captain, artist, dentist, dog trainer, musician, firefighter, Shakespearean heroine and President of the United States, all while carrying on lifelong friendships. G.I. Joe can't begin to compete.

You know, I don't believe that little girls think they need to look like Barbie -- we never thought that when I was growing up. It's the fact that little girls think they need to look like porn stars (and will well into middle age) that I find really disturbing.

Litterbox Barbie with Mika the Cat. Actually, this is Teresa, Barbie's Hispanic friend, the only one who came with a cat in this release; the Barbies came with dogs.

Leonardo da Vinci Barbie, designed by Linda Kyaw to evoke the mysterious Mona Lisa with her enigmatic expression, long flowing hair, and brocade gown featuring a laced satin bodice.

Gustav Klimt Barbie, reflecting the painting Adele Bloch-Bauer I's Byzantine mosaics and Egyptian motifs. She wears a halter gown with silvery trim, draped chiffon sleeves and bustle, as well as silvery choker and cuffs, and her curly parted hair and posable hands suggest the original.

Barbie Gets A Natural Hair Makeover

Okay, she's not a Barbie. This is the Eva Peron doll made by the Franklin Mint. I've wanted one since I found out decades ago that they existed. If Mattel would make an Evita doll I'd snap her up.

Sea World Trainer Barbie. I strongly disapprove of keeping whales captive even for educational purposes, but look at that little seal...

Tefillin Barbie generated an extraordinary amount of feedback. She featured on Jewschool and Jewlicious, on BoingBoing, on Ritualwell, Lilith magazine, New Voices, London Jewish Chronicle, The Jewish Advocate, the Philadelphia Jewish Voice, the New Jersey Jewish News, the Forward... Responses ranged from "...seriously disturbing - like watching a car accident...disgusting" to "to "Finally Barbie has done something I can be proud of!" and "A witty comment on contemporary American Jewish life."

Barbie was created in 1959 by Ruth Handler (a Jewish woman). But Barbie did not particularly resemble Handler’s daughter Barbara, after whom the doll is named. With her blond-bombshell image and perfect nose, The Tribe suggests that Barbie symbolizes the goyishe ideal for a generation of Jews who assimilated their way to the American Dream.

The Tribe weaves together archival footage, graphics, animation, Barbie dioramas, and slam poetry to take audiences on an electric ride through the complex history of both the Barbie doll and the Jewish people- from Biblical times to present day. By tracing Barbie's history, the film sheds light on the questions: What does it mean to be an American Jew today? What does it mean to be a member of any tribe in the 21st Century?
