Miao chest ornament The Chinese minority group called the Miao in South West China is noted for its excellence in designing and fabricating silver jewellery. This design consists of several faceted thick, more or less circular, “bands”, to which are attached carefully graded spirals in typical Miao fashion. The small seemingly minor attachment which is literally central to the whole is visually “spot on” in taking the viewer’s gaze to it within the totality of the excellent form, which it partly echoes. An exercise in seeming simplicity which is artistically very sophisticated.
