Single broad light source at 60 deg. Awkward pose and shadow over face create interest.
Simple two or three light setup. High fill, kicker high to the far left. Great shape and texture. John F. Kennedy by Yousuf Karsh 1960 www.metmuseum.org...

High gridded beauty dish? The shadow on her collar bone makes me think it's not too big of a light source.
Light sources in background. Silhouette. Hard rim light. George Shearing, NYC, New York, ; HERMAN LEONARD,
Way cool low key. Gridded light on face, rim light is probably the same light on the background. Maybe another light for the hand and skateboard detail. Pat Duffy, Photo by Shigeo from Transworld Skateboarding

Hard light straight at her face with sun opposite.
Harsh, high light. Flagged on the sides. Tight background halo.

This light looks like a huge softbox. Subject looking just past the edge of the light source. Interesting simple hand pose.
Powerful flash, wide aperture, neutral density filter. This takes some expensive equipment but the look is phenomenal.

This is the year that I want to try to photograph high school gymnasium sports with sweet lighting.

That texture is entirely due to aggressive side lighting. This would be fun to try. It would be good to practice, because I imagine this taking me several attempts to get the exposure levels correct. At first glance it looks under exposed, but to capture the detail, this is probably dead-on.

Another from Andrew Litsch. He's killing it with small strobes. This lighting shouldn't be tooo hard, but I've never tried.

Before long I'm going to need to pick up a couple more powerful strobes. This is a Einstein w/ Beauty Dish Behind camera.
