The quilt's top is composed of twenty-five pieced blocks within a five-block by five-block grid. Each block is bordered by white linen sashing. Many vivid English printed cottons were used to make the quilt, including the green and burnt orange rainbow fabric that serves as a background for each Mariner's Compass block. The backing is of a blue and white rainbow printed cotton. The quilting follows the outline of each individual compass point.

Sunburst quilt, circa 1885. The vines and leaves, which would usually be appliquéd—sewn onto the quilt—are in fact pieced into the quilt.
