Most cords are cut when they look like the one on the left. This is premature clamping, practiced for years without evidence to its benefits or downsides. Nowadays, even OBs are calling for a change in practice, to wait to clamp the cord until it is white and limp like the one on the right. This ensures the baby gets all of his blood. A doctor writes about it here: academicobgyn.com...

Earthy Motherhood@fb My first time holding my twins. They were a planned home birth but we ended up at the hospital due to premature labor and positioning. I pushed them out 100% naturally on the OR table, while they were trying to prep me for c-section. Baby A came out footling breech and Baby B was transverse but was manually turned and came out posterior, with a nuchal hand and two true knots in his cord. They were in the NICU for 9 days. Baby A is Gideon Bay and Baby B is Lake Nathaniel.

I felt your head moving through my body and I knew you were nearly here. Without thinking, I reached down and greeted your tiny head with my own hands. What a moment. #birth

What can be just as beautiful as a mother who meets her baby for the first time? A father, crying tears of joy at such moment. < That is so lovely

Fetching pins…
Maren Johnson I've had two kids, one 3 1/2 years ago and one 1 year ago, the first in England and the second in the USA, and both times they recommended waiting for the blood to leave the cord to cut it. As far as I know, this is current medical practice, though some places may be behind.
persephone sunset moonstone my first (in the hospital) was instant cut in 1999....my two at home of course were delayed :)
Maren Johnson I'm sorry to hear that. Times are changing though and I am hopeful :) - mine were both in hospitals (I *like* laboring away from home and spent the hours up until I couldn't avoid it any more at museums because laboring at home makes me anxious) and they still did it :)
