Ellen Terry as Lady Macbeth, Tate Galler, 1889 (by John Singer Sargent,1856–1925) The amazing (and somewhat bizarre!) dress was created from thousands of irridescent beetle wings (shed not pulled) and was worn by the celebrated English Shakespearean actress, Ellen Terry (1847-1928 - a great nephew is John Gielgud). Sargent (an American painter working in Europe) painted this portrait of Ellen Terry as she appeared while wearing the amazing robe in her role as Lady Macbeth for Henry Irving’s 1888 London production. The dress survived many years in her wardrobe...Oscar Wilde (a neighbor of Sargent's) described her arrival as Lady Macbeth in a taxi: "The street that on a wet and dreary morning has vouchsafed the vision of Lady Macbeth in full regalia magnificently seated in a four-wheeler can never again be as other streets." The beetlewing gown has been restored and is on display at Terry's final home at Smallhythe Place in Kent. Ellen Terry also appeared in plays by Shaw and Ibsen, as well as in a number of early films, including The Invasion of Britain (1918) and Pillars of Society (1920)

The Harcourt Tiara . . . If Lady Ashburton hadn't been quite so bored at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953, it might have been mine. I was so close. So close.

Tiara Europe ca. 1835 diamonds set in silver, with rubies set in gold, and a gold frame
