Bolton Morris designs, dating. . .to the 1950s, were for a series of four banners with the theme “We Build With Christ” and were to have been executed in appliqué embroidery, a medium he took to high art with his later series for the 1976 Eucharistic Congress. I

Bolton Morris made this processional cross for a liturgical art exhibition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ca 1955. Like many of his works, this piece may no longer even be extant. Working often for little or no remuneration, but out of devout love for the Catholic Church, his pieces were often destroyed by neglect, but even sometimes willfully.

Bolton Morris. This is one of a series of 20 or so painted panels, the above showing St Francis preaching to the birds, the series devoted to the lives of St Francis and St Clare. These were executed in acrylic paint on plywood panels for the refectory of the Monastery of St Clare in Langhorne, Pennsylvania.

There aren’t many cobblers left, but Frankford Ave is lucky to call one home. Gene’s Shoe Repair, located at 4846 Frankford Avenue, has been a fixture of our commercial corridor since the 1970s, when Gene Oliveti’s father, Lou, opened the shop. Lou immigrated to the United States from Italy in the 1920s, and settled in Frankford. Like some of the other artisans and craftsmen on Frankford Ave, such as Gil Pons of Gilbert’s Upholstery, Gene learned the craft from his father and took over the shop.
