The Antikythera Mechanism by Michæl Paukner -- The Antikythera mechanism is an ancient mechanical calculator designed to calculate astronomical positions. It was recovered in 1900-01 from the Antikythera wreck, but its complexity and significance were not understood until decades later. It is now thought to have been built about 100-150 BC. Technological artifacts of similar complexity did not reappear until the 14th century, when mechanical astronomical clocks appeared in Europe.

One of my favorite things about good design is when an often overlooked or undervalued object is turned into something that truly adds value to our lives. The clever people at London design consultancy Berg have recently done just that with the common cash register receipt. Using existing network technology, they’ve turned the often discarded, wallet and purse filling papers into an informative and entertaining infographic format.
