Gamma-ray bursts are the most powerful explosions in the universe. They can emit as much energy as our sun during its entire 10-billion-year lifetime in anywhere from milliseconds to minutes.

Moon - This image of the Moon was taken by the Galileo spacecraft as it passed by. It is a composite of images taken in three different colors. The color scheme is exaggerated to emphasise composition differences. Blue areas are titanium rich, orange areas are titanium poor and purple areas are iron poor.
Mercury: Weirder than we thought via @WiredInsider (not really -- Wired got hosed by some dude squatting on their name. Why were brands slow to come here? Cuz it was too "girlie". Snooze ya looze.)

03/08/2012: One result of recent solar flares: One of the strongest solar storms for many years straight hits Earth's magnetic field. In the north of Scandinavia have been seen in its spectacular Northern Lights series - recording here the sky is near the Faskus fjord on the east coast of Iceland.

This is a rare meteorological phenomenon called a skypunch. When people see these, they think it's the end of the world. Ice crystals form above the high-altitude cirro-cumulo-stratus clouds, then fall downward, punching a hole in the cloud cover. #Meteorology #Weather #Clouds @Jon Butt (This is a demo, Jon, thanks for being a good sport.) ;)

The Helix Nebula is one of brightest and closest examples of a planetary nebula, a gas cloud created at the end of the life of a Sun-like star. The outer gasses of the star expelled into space appear from our vantage point as if we are looking down a helix. The remnant central stellar core, destined to become a white dwarf star, glows in light so energetic it causes the previously expelled gas to fluoresce. The Helix Nebula, given a technical designation of NGC 7293, lies about 700 light-years away towards the constellation of the Water Bearer (Aquarius) and spans about 2.5 light-years. The above picture was taken three colors on infrared light by the 4.1-meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile. A close-up of the inner edge of the Helix Nebula shows complex gas knots of unknown origin.
