"Up until 1920, its published usage was exclusively in veterinary magazines and court cases about dogs. During the year 1920, suddenly the word gained popularity in fiction, magazines, and even some news sources. Why? What happened in 1920? Women's suffrage. Suddenly, "bitch" was used to paint women in this light: malicious, difficult, or "sexually brazen." In short, bitch is the first backlash to feminism."

In this electron micrograph, a human white blood cell is trapping bacterial cells. This type of cell defends the body against pathogens and other harmful particles by engulfing foreign objects and destroying them with the help of enzymes from the cell's lysosomes.

"My work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, I translate scientific data related to astronomy, ecology and meteorology into woven sculptures. My method of translation is principally that of weaving -- in particular basket weaving -- as it provides me with a simple yet highly effective grid through which to interpret data in three-dimensional space. Soft Cities is a San Francisco-based company that sells blankets and napkins. Sounds pretty standard. But actually, there's something quite cool about these blankets and napkins. You can custom-print them to feature a street map of your favorite location, like a college campus, hometown, or far-away city. Working with Stamen Design, an award-winning tech-and-map design firm in the Bay area, it uses open-source software to access a kind of "world-wide Wikipedia for maps" and turns it into custom textiles of any neighborhood you want.
