Located near the city of Osoyoos in British Columbia, Canada’s Spotted Lake draws visitors from around the world. The Spotted Lake has a very highly concentration of numerous different minerals such as magnesium sulfate, calcium and sodium sulphates. It also contains extremely high concentrations of eight other minerals as well as some small doses of four others such as silver and titanium.

Great Borax crystal kit for a take-home project! Inside a wide-mouth quart mason jar, place a baggie with 9 tablespoons of Borax, a length of string, a white pipe cleaner, and a pencil. Send home with directions to create a saturated solution by dissolving the Borax in 3 cups of boiling water (parent help required). Cut the pipe cleaner into 3 equal parts and twist into a snowflake shape. Tie the snowflake to the pencil and submerge. The crystals will grow overnight! When students bring back the clean jar and the crystal snowflake, you can test the hardness, streak, check the luster, and try to identify the crystal structure. You also have a cute winter decoration for the classroom. I am having my students remake the kits at the end of our activity so they will be ready to go for next year. SO FUN! (you can also add a few drops of food coloring to tint your crystals) Perfect for 6th Grade Science.
