I would color the salt dough both cinders black and lava red. Then require three different volcanoes from each small group: cinder cone (all black), shield (all red), and composite (layers of red and black.)

Build an erupting ring of fire! Says for younger students but I don't see why this wouldn't be a FUN activity with middle schoolers! Outside activities are always fun if they know exactly what they will do once they are outside! This one would be high interest!
