Emily Borg you could easily get a piece of glass cut to size of your platter and place it on top of the chalkboard paint, then serve the cheese on top. No toxicity issues there!

Mandy Bates I was going to use pallets in my sons room but a carpenter friend told us not to because you never know what kind of bugs are in the wood. So we used cedar and it looks just as good if not better.

Laura boric acid is a non-toxic fungicide and insecticide. It's been used for years in laundry detergent. Borox laundry booster is good, cheap and readily available in grocery stores. Just soak the wood for a few hours/few days in a solution with water and borox and it will be bug and fungus-free! Don't rinse it off... it will continue to protect the wood if left to dry on it. I used borox (and bleach) to clean barn beams straight from the barn before putting them inside my house and log-cabin builders use borate soaks and plugs to preserve wooden posts on an exterior. The boric acid affects a fungus/bug's ability to digest food, thus it starves to death, preventing wood from rotting and decaying.
