Laura Mize I like this article for parents, but I strongly disagree with her point about not giving a child direct cues to imitate. Verbal imitation is a critical skill for children to master. The therapists she mentioned may have done this before her child was really developmentally ready (hence the strange looks from him!), but we should not shy away from giving late talkers direct cues. While she does mention imitating a child, this practice does build reciprocity, but that strategy in and of itself often does not result in an increase in a child's early word attempts. I mean no disrepect to this mom and what she reported was the certainly worked in the case with her own late talker, but I wanted to share my observation from years and years in the field with hundreds and hundreds of toddlers!
