A better way to grow cilantro - try this method for a fast, continuous crop.

This is a favorite herb with a caveat! The good news is garlic chives are a late blooming herb in July and August. The bad news is if you don't want them to take over, you must cut the flowers as soon as they start to die back or you will have a million (a slight exaggeration) in a minute! I'll get digging most of them out this spring!

Kaffir lime leaves used in Thai cooking. Has to be in a container in the Pittsburgh area. Watch out for the thorns on the trunk. The leaves are very fragrant. They are like a bay leaf. Don't eat them unless they are ground up very finely. Better to use them whole and then take them out at the end of cooking.

If you grow no other herb, make it parsley. This is curly. Italian flat leaf has more flavor, but curly is more decorative. Full sun. Clip the outer leaves. Leave the inner leaves growing to keep plant going. It is a true biennial and the second year the plant makes larval food for the swallowtail butterfly!

Here is the 22 year old bay tree. It is a tender perennial. It would not survive our winters, but may this year it would. Just kidding! Don't try it. It is over six feet tall.
An outstanding hedge of rosemary in the Loire Valley, France in October, 2007.

Lovage in the early spring herb garden. Hardy perennial. Over six feet tall with flowers. Full sun. A strong celery flavor. Because stems are hollow, can be used as a straw in a bloody Mary. Always love to see it in the spring.

I don't have this often enough in the garden. This is valerian in bloom in early June. It smells like vanilla. It is perennial in SW PA. Droops in the sun so plant it where it will have some shade in the afternoon. Gets about five feet with flowers.

This is lemon balm in full bloom! Unless you want a garden full, don't let this happen Cut it by a third to keep it from doing this. I will be busy in the spring pulling extras out! Perennial. Full sun or shade. About 1 foot tall.

You may think of it as a weed, but purslane is a new favorite herb of mine.

Berggarten sage has a bigger leaf than common sage. It was very nice in my garden this season. Can get fairly big in the right spot. Perennial. About 1 foot tall. Full sun.

Golden sage in this year's garden. Depending on the year it can be a half-hardy perennial or a perennial in the herb garden. Can use it just as you would a common sage for culinary purposes. Very nice in a bouquet. About one foot tall and again, full sun.

The yellow flowers are a Rosemary Santolina in full bloom. Leaves are rosemary like and blooms are like a santolina. It was about 3-1/2 feet at its widest. Now it is gone. Hardy perennial. Full sun. About 1-1/2 feet tall. The chipmunk that lives in the wall finally got enough of the root exposed and killed it this year!
Chives just about to bloom. Hardy perennial. Edible flowers. Take the flower apart and sprinkle in your omelet. Full sun. 2 feet tall.
