pure grace is the clean smell of soap and water, the memory of fresh air woven into a set of crisp, white cotton sheets, a cold deep breath on a snowy winter night, the best summer morning you have ever known, the one white t-shirt that feels better than all the rest.

Perfume Ads: not only she's naked but covering herself (does she want to be naked? is she covering herself from the viewer's look?) She's horribly photobutched: the head does not follow the neck.

On another strange note, an Italian company has launched a line of blood scented perfumes called Blood Concept. They come, appropriately enough, in A, B, AB and O. Why blood? According to the company’s website, “Filled with legends and meanings, blood is soaked with mystery‚ fascination and respect” and “guards a multitude of secrets that reveals our inner and unique way of being.”

Andrew Harwood Janitor Cologne Window Jan. 8 - Feb. 14, 1998 Janitor Cologne is dedicated to all artists who work at crap jobs to make ends meet. It is also a tribute to those men and women who work cleaning public spaces in institutions and who largely go unnoticed as individuals, often invisible to the people for whom they clean. It is ironic that, as a caretaker, I have made more money cleaning, than I ever have as an artist is Canada. Janitor Cologne is a send up of the fashion and perfume industries. Industries which demand that the public pay fortunes for colognes and perfumes based, usually on an individual's name or logo as a selling point, rather than on the actual ingredients or beauty of a fragrance. Perfumers in the industry are known as "noses", and garner millions of dollars from their ability to blend up to one hundred fragrances for a single perfume. Janitor Cologne celebrates the opposing principle that anyone can be a celebrity or a designer with a glamorous fragrance. Andrew Harwood is a Toronto-based artist who received his BFA in 1991 from NSCAD, Halifax. He has recently curated the Buffet exhibition for A Space Gallery and in October, 1997. he exhibited work in Queer Looking/Queer Acting, curated by Robin Metcalfe for the Mount St. Vincent University Gallery, Halifax, Nova Scotia.

In his exhibition Garden of Nirvana Noritoshi Hirakawa conceived the work as a means to allow the viewer to experience “a state of nirvana.” More than thirty stainless-steel hangers, specially designed in Japan for drying undergarments, were suspended from the gallery ceiling. During the course of the exhibition, women were invited to anonymously contribute a pair of their underpants (light colored only), which were then clipped to one of the hangers. As the exhibition progressed, the forest of hangers bloomed into a “garden of nirvana.”
Jenny Holzer and Helmut Lang collaborated for the first time on an art project, in which their interest was aimed at the outer covering of the body, the skin. Helmut Lang shaped an inner room by various means among which was smell recalling human skin.

"Filipino artist Christina Goldie Poblador has created the smells of a city: Think whiffs of gasoline or rotten eggs, which is supposed to remind people of government. There are more pleasant fragrances too, which are associated with friendship and family. Her fascinating mixed-media installation work, comprising 30 perfumes in handmade glass bottles, is titled Ang Halimuyak Ng Ma-I or The Fragrance Of Ma-I, the pre-colonial name of the Philippines. The “fragrances” were created as part of her studio art graduation project at the University of Philippines in March. It created so much interest that it has travelled to three locations in Manila and made it to a prestigious Filipino art showcase here".

Funeral Home is a blend of classic white flowers: lilies, carnations, gladiolus, chrysanthemums with stems and leaves, with a hint of mahogany and oriental carpet. This scent actually started out to be Flower Show. Now our founding perfumer personally did NOT like most white flowers so this was a tough fragrance for him to develop. When a friend first smelled this one and exclaimed: 'it smells like my Grandfather's funeral... call it Funeral Home!', we did.
