What are the makings for a great date night? Excellent cocktails? Check. Great music? Check. Orchids? Uhm…yes! If you haven’t checked out the New York Botanical Garden’s Orchid Evenings yet, you really must do yourself (and that special someone) a favor and hook yourself up.

Orchids aren’t just colorful, they also have incredible shapes

Every now and again an event comes along during an exhibition like the Orchid Show that eclipses the beauty of the flowers themselves. It’s a statement you might find a bit on the mushy side, but I think you’ll agree that it’s apt. Because when Qu and Wahnzen stepped into the Conservatory a few weeks ago, one of the pair knew very little of the fairytale moment unfolding.

Of the many thousands of orchids on display during the Orchid Show, the two most requested flowers are the vanilla orchid and what is known as Darwin’s orchid.

The Orchid Show means thousands upon thousands of orchids, curling and spiraling their way across nine separate vertical walls of exotic foliage. It’s a family reunion of sorts in the Conservatory.

Patrick Blanc joins our NYBG experts in explaining just how important biodiversity is to making the Orchid Show–as well as horticulture and environmental awareness on the whole–a runaway success!

In looking at the green walls that Patrick Blanc pulls from his imagination, you might regard each one as something similar to a painting. In a way, they are–they rely on careful color choices and shapes to create (in this case) an abstract flow. But depending on the artist you ask, the process of building a green wall can be far more organization-intensive.

It is THE flower that everyone who visits the #orchidshow this year is obsessing over, and it's not even an orchid! (Thanks @Bergdorf Goodman for the photo!)

It might not be structurally feasible, but aside from that tiny concern I can’t see why we’re not building everything with explosions of flowers.

Since we are now in the midst of our spring Orchid Show, today we will explore why orchids are such good candidates for vertical gardening. With somewhere in the area of 70% of all orchids being epiphytic, members of the Orchidaceae family were destined to climb.

Patrick Blanc welcomes you to The Orchid Show: Patrick Blanc's Vertical Gardens at The New York Botanical Garden!

Shari J Wells totally beautiful!!

Outside, the chill factor is dawdling somewhere around “I can still see my breath.” Step into the Conservatory, however, and you’ll find yourself closer to the equator. The Orchid Show is our little slice of summer in the tropics.

Karen Case Beautiful!

In honor of The Orchid Show, we thought we’d blow the lid off the vanilla bean’s poorly-kept secret: it’s not a bean at all, but the seed pod of an orchid (Vanilla planifolia).

It’s here. The Orchid Show! It’s like a birthday present that’s been sitting in front of you for a month: you know exactly what it is but you can’t actually enjoy it until the big day comes around.

As we near the opening of The Orchid Show, we begin looking at the work of French designer Patrick Blanc, the mind behind the elegant and awe-inspiring living architecture being raised for this year’s exhibition. Of course, his efforts in the botanical field extend well beyond the complex aesthetics of his world-famous “green wall” creations. As one of the most renowned plant hunters to have traveled abroad, his global gallivanting yields many an interesting result for the scientific community.
