Books About Sustainability

I read about sustainability (which, by the way, is a very wide net that touches just about everything). I interview authors. And I write about it (mostly on my blog, FoodShed Planet). They're not really reviews. They're stories (and I only write about the books I like or love). Enjoy! Contact me at sustainablepattie@comcast.net

Okay, so how exactly does this photo relate to one of my favorite books ever, 'Round Ireland with a Fridge? Click photo to find out!

Pliny the Elder! We can't have a list of books about sustainability without Pliny! And the fact that this was a gift from my teen makes it extra-special to me. Click photo to read my story about it (and don't miss more Pliny fun in my book, Food for My Daughters).

I really like this cookbook (and I especially liked being able to vote with my dollars for it at Ten Thousand Villages, one of my favorite stores). It's by Mennonites, who believe "change is an act of faith." Click photo to read my story about it.

What on earth does this photo have to do with the outstanding book, Blessed Unrest, by Paul Hawken? Click photo to read my story.

I loved this book from beginning to end. Michael Ableman is both an exquisite writer and outstanding photographer, and this book shows off both those arts. Click photo to read my story about it.

Have we possibly made it this far into our book conversation without me mentioning this book?!!! Oh, my gosh, this one is a must. It started as one of the best newspaper articles I ever read, and grew into a book. I know the main person featured personally, and she has a true aura about her. Click photo to read my story about the book (written before I met Luma).

I read Eat Pray Love one Memorial Day Weekend. One day I ate, the next I prayed, the third I loved. Click photo to read my story about it.

I tell about a beloved book, An Orange for Frankie, from my favorite children's illustrator, Patricia Polacco, in this story (click photo to read), which I run right before Christmas each year.

The book with one of my favorite titles ever is Alone in the Kitchen with an Eggplant. Click to read my story about it--including the shocked look when I asked a store clerk if he had it. Perhaps I shouldn't have whispered.

This is an outstanding book, gracefully written by Alice Waters and including lots of photos about the transformation of a middle school parking lot into a school garden. A line from this book is one of my favorite lines ever: "Beauty is not a luxury." Click photo to read my story about it.

I liked this book (and I think of it often), but I especially loved hearing this author tell his story. Click photo to read my story about the night I met him.

This is one of my five favorite books of all time, not only because Anita Roddick is one of my heroes, and not only because of the the thought-provoking topics written about in this book, but because it is designed brilliantly (and I truly love that). Click photo to read what I wrote the day after Anita Roddick died.

This one, with had chapters titled Crevice Invasion, On Gopher Humps, and The Pharmacy of Molds, got made into a movie, if you can even believe it.

My gosh, this book is delicious to read. David Mas Masumoto is a treasure.

Another one I loved by Michael Perry. I actually stood and read this entire book, forgetting to even sit down.

Michael Perry is one of my favorite writers. I would read his grocery lists. Beautiful, beautiful writer. Click the photo to read my story about him.

Michelle Maistro is a true writer's writer. Just taste how delicious this line is: "These days I find I've become our relationship's barometer, its dedicated lighthouse keeper, my finger licked and lifted to every shift of mood, change of tone." Click the photo to read my story about this book, and my interview with this author.

If you're a TOMS fan, you'll especially enjoy reading founder Blake Mycoskie's story, plus the advice he offers for starting something that matters in your own life. Click photo to read my story about it.

Let's put it this way. I loved this book so much that when a girl I adored moved cross-country, I gave it to her. And then I missed it (and her) so much I repurchased the book. Click photo to read my story about it.

Am about to donate My Jamie to Better World Books' new drop box at Truly Living Well's Wheat Street Gardens urban farm in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward. I LOVE THIS BOOK, but I love what Better World Books is doing more (donating to global literacy projects close to home and around the world)

"True to Our Roots" is THE book that changed my life. Interviewed the author (who is sort of a hero to me). Click photo to read my story about it.
