Monument Valley Mesa 44 x 64 This quilt was one of the pieces documenting the many trips our family has taken throughout the Southwest, camping, hiking and exploring. I have always loved the receding border designed by Angela Madden in her book “Pieceful Scenes” and used her directions along with my Electric Quilt software to design this piece. I incorporated yarns and beads to bring the scene to life. I also used Shiva Paintstiks to add texture and dimension to the mesas.

Both trees symbolize an entire lifetime lived out through the rotation of 5 seasons – winter, spring, summer, fall, rain. The circle of light symbolizes that most of the days are happy but the storms of life (depression and disappointment) surround the tree as suggested by the rainy skies. The root systems symbolize the depth the trees have to dig to root themselves into the water table below– where it’s dark, cold and hard work but necessary in order to grow tall and well-formed. Both trees have the same challenges in life yet one digs deeper than the other which results in a more developed and mature oak (outer life) with an equally mature root system (inner life). The water table represents the nourishment that comes from digging into the bedrock and growing roots that feed the entire tree from underneath. The well-formed branches are raised in praise to the Master Designer. The outer borders suggest the continuation of the story beyond the edges of the quilt – the future yet unseen.

"Easy Street" where all the houses are built on credit...little pieces of credit cards.
“Cumbria” 36″ x 30″ fabric pastel sketch, overpainted with fabric paints. Edges are constructed from hand-painted fabrics and embellished with polyester specialty fabrics. Primarily hand-appliquéd and machine-quilted.
The assessment was to make a piece using appliqué techniques. It has three layers – painted silk organza, handmade felt, and painted silk pongee. The shadow appliqué shapes are hand dyed cotton and hand painted silk, and the machine and hand quilting are in cotton. I cut back the top layer of some of the shadow appliqué and machine quilted areas after quilting them. I finished the edges with buttonhole stitch and then needlefelted them to break down the stitches into the felt. The support is a piece of driftwood I found on the beach, and the work is 53cm x 78cm
