SPECIAL INVITATION TO ALL FOLLOWERS OF THIS BOARD TO ANSWER AN OT DISCUSSION QUESTION: Occupational Therapist Tamsin wants help brainstorming all the different ways that OTs can simulate what it feels like for kids who have SPD. These ideas can then be used for teachers and parents in workshops so that they can get an idea of what the children experience on a day-to-day basis. Please contribute here!

Marcy Boudreaux-Johnson Turn a radio to " static" and crank it up! Safety pin burlap or other itchy fabric to back collar so that it rubs against skin. Have obnoxious smells in empty medicine bottles and pass around closely to participants nose (simulating what a teacher's fav perfume could feel like to a child with SPD).

Profile picture of Tara Lindsay

Tara Lindsay At a workshop I gave, we had everyone try to write out the pledge of allegiance while singing "Row, Row, Row your boat" over and over...all while the lights were flashing off and on. Then we sat there reminding them to "Hurry up...all the other kids are done...your friends are going out to play..." Everyone got the concept of overload *really* fast, then we explained that for sensory kids, that is what even a seemingly simple task can feel like.

Kelley Barrios Wow, just have to say my daughter's name is Izzy and she has SPD and covers her ears a lot. We now have earphones that block out noise. Anyways, I wish she was a little ledger and could articulate what she hears and how it makes her feel.

Connie Mercado I like to use the example of being on a carnival ride when trying to explain what a child with SPD might feel...being stuck on a ride that spins and flips in all directions and about 30 seconds into the ride, you want off because your sense of self- awareness is pretty much gone, but you have no control of how long the ride goes on...I imagine that's what sensory overload might feel like.

Profile picture of Starfish Therapies

Starfish Therapies From my OT: To make a weighted blanket your best bet is if you or someone you know sew. The weight is best distributed if you sew it like a quilt. You can fill the blanket with rocks, rice, beans or other washable materials to weigh it down. You want to try to evenly distribute the weight in each square. The rule for weight is generally 10% of the child's body weight. If you are using it for sleeping start with hips and down initially because you want to be careful about breathing.

New Research on Sensory Over-Responsivity (SOR) suggests possible prenatal risk factors, genetic heritability, and supports uniqueness of Sensory Processing Disorder/SOR. Dr. Hill Goldsmith, a member of the SPD Scientific Workgroup from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and his colleagues recently published two peer-reviewed manuscripts that evaluated the genetics of Sensory Over-Responsivity1, 2. The first study focuses on SOR at age two years and examines toddler temperament and prenatal risk factors. The second paper focuses on SOR at age seven years and examines distinctiveness of SOR with other diagnoses.- Pinned by @PediaStaff – Please visit ht.ly/63sNt for all (hundreds of) our pediatric therapy pins
