Student work. Students were shown examples of the Surrealistic painting technique of decalcomania used by Max Ernst, then given indistinct forms of dried Great Stuff spray foam insulation to interpret and transform into a fantastical creature of their own invention.

The Coil Pot Game is a high energy skill game we play during those crazy days that one class is ahead, another behind, or a snow delay has left us no other choice in scheduling! It is also a great lesson for a substitute teacher to follow through with- quick and easy directions for someone not comfortable with usual art plans. Students are divided into teams of 3-4 and given equal amounts of modeling clay per group. They are given a review on rolling coils, using a "pancake" bottom and general construction. Students are asked to develop strategies with their group. They should consider theories on construction, like: how they can best use their amount of clay...large coils vs. small coils? Also, divide jobs between teammates. The timer is set for approx. 15-25 minutes (you choose). BUZZZZZ! Measure all standing structures to determine the winning group! Remember: Students must let go of their vessels on the buzzer. Falling coils are disqualified, sorry! Structure and construction are important. Many of my winners do so on the "slow and steady win the race" theory I enjoy watching each group look at their peers ideas...they learn, rip apart, recoil, etc. I feel this game builds fantastic problem solving skills. We often call it our "Survivor Challenge" for all of you reality TV fans out there.

BRILLIANT - HOMEMADE GESSO RECIPE, couple things about this it is a little rougher than normal gesso but it does sand nicely. Because of the baby powder it will be a little chalkier /-when sanding so use a fine sand paper. Cure time is 24 hours but you can speed it up with a hair dyer or a heat gun. 1 part white glue (I used cheap white glue from the Dollar Store - you can also use PVA glue or Elmer's) 3 parts water (since I used the cheap white glue I should have decreased the water to 2 parts) 6 parts baby powder (since I used way more water than what I should have, I used more baby powder. I did not measure I tilted the baby powder container and squeezed - scientific I know) I added some Titanium White from the an almost empty 2 oz. tube of Liquitex (there was maybe a TBSP left in it.) I mixed everything in a air tight container the constancy is like a pancake batter - it will settle (like normal Gesso) so you will need to mixed it before use. Surprisingly it takes paint really well, it also sands nicely. It also way cheaper than "real" gesso

Ahh this is crazy! Trace the hand in pencil. With a marker, draw a straight line until you get to the hand. Then make a curve from one line to the next, then continue the straight line.
