I did this project today and have some feedback: Use high quality crayons, like Cr*yola. I got silicone heart-shaped pans at Targ-t ( as suggested above) for $2.50 and was happy to send so little, however, the heart crayons turn out kind of shallow in those pans and could break in half easily. I know Wilton sells another higher quality heart shape silicone mold for around $10 and wish I had used those. I would have gotten further use out of them (making soaps, candies, cakes, etc.). I used Rosea*t crayons and there is a serious residue left in the pan (which you should not have to spray prior to using) which has not come off after a trip thru the dishwasher. This is just my experience, which may be helpful to others. Cute project, daughter loved it! Thanks!

I could only find the larger heart (6) pans at W@lmart yesterday. Where do they have the little (12) heart pans? Our t@rget didn't have them. Think I'll try Bed B@th and Beyond later today.

Thumbnail of Sarah N Matthew

Sarah N Matthew
I used an exaxto-knife to get the wrappers off, but for the more stubborn ones you can soak them in a bowl of warm water and the wrappers usually just float off. Ours came our super cute, but you have to be sure to let them cool all the way, not be impatient like me or they will break easily!! Sticking even the silicone pan in the freezer works wonders :)

I'm sure Michael's has them! :-) A friend of mine got the ones from Target and she said their Silicone heart trays melted on her. :-( I have the big set of 6 tin also. I'm sure I'll find one at the craft stores!

Is the message handwritten on a coaster or printed on. I would love to try this.

Thumbnail of Amber Evans

Just made these last night with my 6 year old. They turned out so cool! We used the silicone muffin pans from Target and had NO problems at all. The only suggestion I have is to put the silicone pan on a cookie sheet otherwise they are wobbly and easy to spill when you take them out of the oven. These are going to be the coolest Valentine;s EVER!

Thumbnail of Beth Veerman Smith

Beth Veerman Smith
I made these yesterday and they turned out awesome. Use a silicone tray over a cookie sheet. The worst part was peeling the paper off the crayons, but it was worth it. Have fun!

how did you stick the crayon on the paper?

Thumbnail of Amber Evans

Amber Evans
We used a tape runner from Creative Memories to tape the crayon to the paper. We had to attach the flatside to the paper which happened to be the least attractive side to the paper. Tried masking tape and it didn't work so we used teh tape runner. Also happened to find note cards and envelopes-in the basement- that we used for the valentines. I had my 6 year old sign her name inside each card and I wrote the saying on the front.

Thumbnail of Amber Evans

And the "Cheap" crayons had teh easiest paper to remove..

I got my pan on Ebay. If you soak your crayons in water first, it makes the paper come off easily and just let the crayons dry before melting them.

I Cut the crayon wrappers with a Knife and the whole thing comes off easy. I used the Wilton Gingerbread Boy 24 cavity silicone Mold, I bought at walmart for $8.96. Fill up the cavity with a lot of crayons to make a thicker crayon.

Just made these today and they turned out so cute! Using them for my daughter's Valentine exchange with the saying "You melt my heart." Both my 6 year old daughter and 10 year old son both love them. Soak the crayons in water for a little bit to loosen the wrappers. Definitely put the tray on a cookie sheet first to make it easier to pull out of the oven.

If you use a Target ice cube tray, make sure you don't set the heat above about 220 because they might melt otherwise. We did 220 for abotu 15 min and they melted just fine!
