When I worked w. 1st & 2nd graders I used to collected all the broken pieces and @ the end of the year I will melt it into different shapes and give it to the kids as a gift.

I totally did this with car shapes for my sons car-themed birthday party a few years back; it was so easy and totally the hit of the gift bags!

We did this tonight. Kids LOVED it! The only bad part is that the pans will not come clean!
Kim Hamilton
We are doing this now - literally! We took a knife and cut down the length if the crayon - the paper just peeled right off. I'll let you know how it goes!
Mandy Omo
made these today...DO NOT OVERHEAT...mine liquified! Target has silcon heart pans for $2.50 in the dollar section right now!

What does the quote say on the valentine? I want to do these for my kids valentines day exchange.
Michelle Harsch
Target is selling these silicon trays in their dollar bins. We did this project yesterday and they turned out GREAT! Thanks!
Annabelle Stockton
@michelle harsch i got the silicone heart shaped tray too, i am making these for my girls, were they easy to pull out?

my mom used to do this when i was a kid! we used all kinds of things even tuna cans and then we would cut them.

is there an easy way to get the wrappers off? A lot of my crayons wrappers are glued on. :-( LOVE this idea!!!

I did this project today and have some feedback: Use high quality crayons, like Cr*yola. I got silicone heart-shaped pans at Targ-t ( as suggested above) for $2.50 and was happy to send so little, however, the heart crayons turn out kind of shallow in those pans and could break in half easily. I know Wilton sells another higher quality heart shape silicone mold for around $10 and wish I had used those. I would have gotten further use out of them (making soaps, candies, cakes, etc.). I used Rosea*t crayons and there is a serious residue left in the pan (which you should not have to spray prior to using) which has not come off after a trip thru the dishwasher. This is just my experience, which may be helpful to others. Cute project, daughter loved it! Thanks!

I could only find the larger heart (6) pans at W@lmart yesterday. Where do they have the little (12) heart pans? Our t@rget didn't have them. Think I'll try Bed B@th and Beyond later today.

I used an exaxto-knife to get the wrappers off, but for the more stubborn ones you can soak them in a bowl of warm water and the wrappers usually just float off. Ours came our super cute, but you have to be sure to let them cool all the way, not be impatient like me or they will break easily!! Sticking even the silicone pan in the freezer works wonders :)

I'm sure Michael's has them! :-) A friend of mine got the ones from Target and she said their Silicone heart trays melted on her. :-( I have the big set of 6 tin also. I'm sure I'll find one at the craft stores!

Jo@ann has a Wilton tray with 24 small hearts! I didn't see any in their Valentine section, but then found it in their regular baking/wedding section. On sale for $6 and change. Can't wait to make these!

Just made these last night with my 6 year old. They turned out so cool! We used the silicone muffin pans from Target and had NO problems at all. The only suggestion I have is to put the silicone pan on a cookie sheet otherwise they are wobbly and easy to spill when you take them out of the oven. These are going to be the coolest Valentine;s EVER!

I made these yesterday and they turned out awesome. Use a silicone tray over a cookie sheet. The worst part was peeling the paper off the crayons, but it was worth it. Have fun!

We used a tape runner from Creative Memories to tape the crayon to the paper. We had to attach the flatside to the paper which happened to be the least attractive side to the paper. Tried masking tape and it didn't work so we used teh tape runner. Also happened to find note cards and envelopes-in the basement- that we used for the valentines. I had my 6 year old sign her name inside each card and I wrote the saying on the front.

I got my pan on Ebay. If you soak your crayons in water first, it makes the paper come off easily and just let the crayons dry before melting them.

I Cut the crayon wrappers with a Knife and the whole thing comes off easy.
I used the Wilton Gingerbread Boy 24 cavity silicone Mold, I bought at walmart for $8.96. Fill up the cavity with a lot of crayons to make a thicker crayon.

Just made these today and they turned out so cute! Using them for my daughter's Valentine exchange with the saying "You melt my heart." Both my 6 year old daughter and 10 year old son both love them. Soak the crayons in water for a little bit to loosen the wrappers. Definitely put the tray on a cookie sheet first to make it easier to pull out of the oven.

What a great idea for old, broken crayons. And a great recycling idea. Can be used in so many different ways.

I bought an icecube tray at Target and it worked great. I would spend a little more for crayola crayons. We used Cra-z-Art crayons and they melted weird.
Shyra Wyatt
i did this i used the cra-z-art crayones and they melted strange for sure next time i will try crayola but they still turned out really neat they will be my sons valentines for his preschool class cute idea

i found molds at Ikea, and once you use it for crayons, it will be stained- but it was only $2 or so
Kara Ramirez
You can get the stains out of the trays by using goo gone* ii sprayed the tray and then used a toothbrush to scrub. The color stains came right off!
Leah Bodeen Meiser
I got the Gingerbread mold at Walmart for 8.96. The heart ones, you can get at Joanne Fabrics. (I borrowed mine from my sister). Michael's doesn't have the heart ones. .

If you use a Target ice cube tray, make sure you don't set the heat above about 220 because they might melt otherwise. We did 220 for abotu 15 min and they melted just fine!
