I'm now nearly 50 and dyslexic, at 8 my older brother taught me this and from then on it made b&d and the word bed easier to work out.
Diane Elder
b comes before d just like our left hand comes before our right hand, the same is true for p and q. I have used this for years with students.
Anna Myers
I use the "p,q" but only after the "b,d" is very solid. And I say "put the quilt on the bed" and ur hands go from upside down to right side up as you say it. Again, only for kids who have mastered "b,d" or else you add to the confusion.

You also do that to figure out which drink is yours at a fancy place with too many cups! Bread and Drink!

Ok, I have the grown-up version of this! This is the same way u remember whhich side is your 'B"read dish and your "D"rink glass at a formal table!!
Jane Nelson
I love this. I used it all the time when I was tutoring...if a kid mixed them up reading or writing, I'd just say "check your bed." The only thing you want to watch out for is that they may come to rely on it a bit too much.

As a long time special education teacher, I taught this with the following poem;
I am b - hold left hand thumb up to form b
I am d - hold right hand thumb up to form d
We are not the same you see.
Use your hands and you will know,
Which way b and d should go.
