Did the orchid one (in the back) for my wedding but used real flowers... it was beautiful! The only thing I'm thinking is fake might actually work better than real because my flowers expanded throughout the evening and popped out of the water, making the candles a bit lopsided after a few hours. Still really pretty though!!!

Oh, I forgot to add, I added floating candles on top. :)

I have designed a wedding and have helped with countless weddings. I have seen this to many times. It is over done. I have done them with and with out candles. Please if you are thinking about doing this for your wedding??? dont!!!! It looks cheap!!!! Really cheap!!!!!

You can find nice looking plastic orchid flowers that work well too! Where to find them is craft stores and even dollar stores. Just be careful To look for good quality slik or plastic flowers. You don't have to spend a lot. Do a trial one to see if you like how it looks before you invest in something that you end up not liking. Remember one thing! It's Your Wedding and your budget! If you choose real or fake flowers,as long as you are happy with your choice then its the right choice for you! Good luck to all of you and enjoy the process as well ad YOUR special day!

I did this at my daughters wedding and i can assure you it did not look cheap! I used teal rocks in the bottom and the pink orchids with the 3" floating candle on the top. Along side of these we had short votives inside 4 " tall vases with coffee beans around the votives. It was done inexpensivly (not cheaply) for a gorgeous look! I wish i had a pic right now to show. But her colors were Brown, pink, and teal, with a peacock kinda theme. I utilized the dollar store the the fullest!

Just did this for a fund raiser. Silks actually work better because they are heavier and stay submerged I also used fresh and used fishing weights with wire to hold the fresh ones down, it leaves space at the top for the floating candles.

How do you keep them from floating?

Thumbnail of Diane Watson

Diane Watson
Alli, Mine were silk and they didn't float at all. Might be the weight of the stem possibly. I also used rocks in the bottom but didn't anchor them with the rocks, as it wasn't neccesary. I was leary about using fake flowers but they acutally looked gorgous and you could not tell they were fake. They kept well in the water and actually dried out in perfect shape to be used again.

I really want to try this with my wedding bouqet I dried out, I heard you can use clear candle gel I guess it is called and it is kinda bubbly at first but sets beautifully. and it works better with real flowers than distilled water because the real flowers will float. Not to mention these are already dried out water would ruin them. But I want to do something creative with them so I can display them Has anyone tried it or have any suggestions?
