People still climb these stairs even though they're closed... you just have to show up really early (like 4-5am) before the guard gets there. They were actually repaired in 2003 and are perfectly safe... well, as safe as they can be anyway.

They must have recently rebuilt a lot of the stairs & hand rails. I did this about 12 yrs ago & most everything was rusted away.

I live here & when I drove past on Friday around 5 pm I saw people climbing. They're in bad shape, so you take your chances & must climb before or after the guard is there!! No better scenery!

Gosh I didn't realize people could climb these. Was there 8 yrs ago and just looking at the stairs from the road scared me!!!!

I've climbed these also, it was on my 21st birthday 4 years ago and it was amazing. so incredibly beautiful especially since you have to do it in the middle of the night so you dont run into the guards and then get to watch sunrise at the top!
