I do it the same way for dinner parties -- but add a red or blue dot sticker on the post-it. Red = girl and Blue = boy so a table isn't too male or female heavy.

There is free software that lets you do this. I believe it is called Seating Chart. I downloaded it when I thought there was going to be a wedding in my family.
