a map of the town of Guildford (England) in 1739. A gorgeous example of what it looks like when food grows everywhere: The hospital has huge vegetable gardens, the School has an orchard…it appears that this town was totally self-sustaining agriculturally, as were many of the time.

In 1997 the French choreographer Daniel Larrieu invited William Forsythe to make a new piece for his company. Forsythe was too busy, so his solution was to make a dance communicated entirely by fax, and translated into movement by the dancers themselves. Hypothetical Stream is derived from a series of Tiepolo pereparatory drawings over which a hieroglyphic of lines and numbers has been scribbled. Dancers love to work with this kind of freedom.
A space plan for Merce Cunningham’s Summerspace, 1958. The drawing contains the idea for the whole piece: six dancers, six entrances, each dancer will make all 21 possilbe crossings of the space using 21 different kinds of movement phrasing. The order of events was derived from chance operations.

A page from the notebook of choreographer Rosemary Butcher, showing preparatory time and space drawings for her 1999 piece scan. Rough notes like these help visualise texture and keep track of the process.

lubec-campobello island-composite mapping: As part of an architectural documentation class, I created a map that describes a site that I was studying for studio. It explores the idea that a map can be descriptive of experience, emotion, and the power that it holds to be an empathetic representation of place. It is about going beyond the objective description of information that is typical of a conventional map. This map acted as a catalyst that helped inform my design.

Jennifer Maravillas. She's a freckled pixie VCU alum from the Eastern suburban milds of Virginia Beach that's been gracefully transplanted to the Western wilds of San Francisco. She's an artist, adventurer and gatherer of neighborhood detritus. She has, amongst other things, created the visually striking colorful maps posted here in this blog and is soon to be the creative force behind the next print edition of this site, Gungho Guides.

Alicia Merrett I have a tea-towel with a section of Stephen Walter's map of London, "The Island" - I bought it at the British Library in London, where they had the original map on display during their "Magnificent Maps" exhibition a couple of years ago. I don't use it as a tea-towel though - it just adorns a corner of my studio. The area of London where I used to live is depicted there. It is the most brilliant piece of work!
Valerie Goodwin I am envious Alicia...love it!
Helen McCormack this map will be shown at the London Transport Museum Map exhibition this summer. I also saw the British Library's exhibition on maps but missed the chance at getting a tea towel! I will make sure to get some reproductions of this one at the exhibition this summer, can't wait!
