The 1988 White House Christmas Ornament On December 19, 1836, President Andrew Jackson threw a Christmas party in honor of the children who lived in the White House, a group which included his own adopted son as well as several nephews and nieces. The invites read: “The children of President Jackson’s Family request you to join them on Christmas Day at four o’clock p.m. in a frolick in the East Room.” The guests played games in the East Room of the White House, danced, sang songs, ate plenty of candy and cake, and ended the evening with a mock snowball fight, using cotton balls that had been frosted in such a way that they exploded with a puff of smoke and a crack upon impact.
