amazing vegetarian chili - i pulsed the portobello in my food processor and it totally gave it that meaty texture. we skipped the zucchini, serrano peppers, and broth and it was delicious!

Profile picture of Sara Barnes

Sara Barnes made it a second time and happened to have half a jalapeno, some red bell, and a poblano pepper so we threw them all in. still a winner!

This is dangerously easy. Mug brownie. 4 TBS flour, 4 TBS sugar, 2 TBS cocoa powder 2 TBS veggie oil 2 TBS water, dash of salt. Nuke in microwave for 1 min.

ABin5 Whole Wheat Master Recipe (used for sandwich bread)

jalapeno and lime marinated kale tostada (made with chard b/c we had it and i blended half of the marinated kale in with the beans and then added diced tomato and onion to the remaining greens to make a "leafy pico") homerun... this was amazing!

1 package Oreos, 5 cups of marshmallows, 4 tablespoons of butter - just like rice krispies treats, except Oreos! (I used way too many marshmallows and they didn't look at all like the photo - made correctly I think they'd be dangerously good)

granola - nutella style! (was way more exciting in concept... i like my honey cinnamon granola more than this one)

buttermilk biscuits (sub shortening for more butter, sub milk w/plain yogurt for buttermilk)

Pumpkin Scones (subbed sweet potato and dusted with sugar instead of glazing)

Peel an entire head of garlic in 10 seconds. Just did this in a quart sized mason jar - We're gonna start going through a TON of fresh garlic in this house...

Sticky Pecan Caramel Rolls - minus the pecans (Willa doesn't like nuts, go figure) these are the cinnamon buns I improvised almost exactly. and she said everything that i would have said about them!

one pot stovetop mac&cheese - surprisingly decadent (omitted mustard powder and nutmeg, added a little freshly cracked pepper... had to add almost 1/2 cup of liquid at the end)

Master Recipe for Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day. The dough we use for pizza, flatbread, english muffins, crusty rolls and more. If you can memorize 6-3-3-13, you'll never need to look at the recipe. That's double the master batch, but it's easy to halve or third for a smaller one. 6 cups lukewarm water, 3 tbsp sea salt, 3 tbsp yeast, 13 cups flour. mix (don't knead) and store in the fridge for up to two weeks. tear off hunk of dough as needed. the blog on their site has tons of detailed instructions for making different types of bread with it.

Better Than From A Bakery Granola - love this. i add a half cup of oats and use extra virgin coconut oil. i also lower the heat to 250-300 and bake for longer, then i let it cool in the oven without ever flipping it. perfection.

Cinnamon Almonds 1 c. Sugar, 3 C. Almonds, 1/2 T. Cinnamon, 1/4 C. Water - heat in skillet and then cool on wax paper. (used a different method but this one is simpler. delicious, subbed honey for most of the sugar)

black bean soup recipe - delicious. i don't puree any beans with the tomatoes. and i think i added less beans in exchange for adding chopped red bell pepper and onion. canned a batch of this and have already eaten half of it.

homemade yogurt - way easier than you think. i don't even use a thermometer. warm jars in oven @ 200 degrees. heat milk on the stove until it's just starting to bubble, just below a boil. turn off/remove from heat and let stand until it's very hot but not painfully hot to the touch. in a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup per gallon of milk (you can do a half batch or whatever) of "yogurt starter" which is just plain storebought yogurt or yogurt that you saved from your last batch. mix until smooth and then add to the rest of your milk. pour into warm jars and put the lids on. turn oven off and stick jars inside. throw a towel over them. let sit for 6 hours or more. (I usually just do this at night and let them sit all night.) then refrigerate, flavor, and enjoy!

homemade cereal bars - tried to sub strawberry jelly for the filling. mixed results. the kids ate it all but wasn't what i was looking for. keep trying to remember to buy figs to make the original recipe.

Cook eggs in muffin tin! - Been cooking eggs this way and then letting them cool on a plate in the freezer before tossing them in a freezer bag. Senator can pull a couple out along with his morningstar sausage patties and make a quick breakfast sandwich.

baked southwestern egg rolls (vegetarian) - still working on tweaking the filling, but this method is awesome. i've been preparing big batches, then freezing before baking. they go straight from the freezer to oven and are ready in 15-20 minutes. perfect.
