Eurovision voting: "While the system may be simple, the results are anything but. Certain patterns of voting are fairly predictable. Cyprus gives 12 points to Greece. Former Soviet republics give high scores to Mother Russia. What happens in Scandinavia stays in Scandinavia. These phenomena have been described in detail, both academically and in cartoon form."

Dirk Aßmann-Staudt As a german I allways wonder about how touchy some Americans are about religion. Unrelaxed that is. Plus intorlerant. A country where they try to establish creationism instead of biology in school. Best comment here in my eyes is: "God created evolution." Since at some point science is as much a believe as any religion we all could be just relaxe and try to lead a respectfull, tolerant and openminded life towards every human and nature.
Sylvia Droz 'God created evolution'. That could've happened. I don't get how the Christians can believe that their God is all powerful, all knowing, can do everything and anything but yet the thought that god might've created evolution is like blasphemy?! The story of creation was in the bible. God inspired the bible. God did not write the bible. Man wrote the bible and man is not perfect or exempt from sin. Who knows maybe God was like 'Story of creation, GO!' and the man was like 'Hmmm i want us to be created in 6 days, sounds good!" .. in the end, we don't know how things went from nothing to something. No body really knows so why not share and examine theories together rather than fighting

"How did bacon emerge as part of hipster, SF Mission, and Internet culture?" "I think it started with the installation of thousands of bacon dispensers in public restrooms. Bacon was largely under appreciated before then. These new machines revitalized an interest in bacon when it became easier to obtain it. I find myself using the bacon dispenser whenever I use a bathroom that has one. Sanitary? Who cares? It's bacon!"

Cyndi as someone who started a second career at age 40 in nerdy field--though always a nerd at heart--I would say the red line should be a little higher and flat up until ~35 and the blue line a little lower than the red but making a constant upward climb until the exponential climb starting at age 35.

"Instagram’s numbers are exactly what you’d want to see in a social network — high user counts with the lowest number of employees. This ratio is a measure of efficiency, and it’s no surprise that Instagram comes out on top here, with one employee for every 2.07 million users. On the other end of the scale are the short-lived Q service Aardvark, with one employee for every 1,800 users, and customer-service giant Zappos with one employee for every 3,400 users."

Aubrie Colburn What if global warming really is bunk? Then we'll have created a better world for nothing!
Navarro Diego Navarro My problem is not with the general concept of global warming, it's (0) the outright dismissal of geoengineering proposals to help mitigating its potential effects, (1) the politically-driven consensus (not by "commies", but bureaucrats at a glorified Invisible Children-type operation) rushing the science to present a conclusion that isn't there yet, (2) presenting paleoclimatology, a statistical discipline that tries to reconstruct the past, as the whole of"climate science", with little to none metereological grounding and (3) the dismissal of the most important pieces of information in the Climategate email, which are the flawed code routines that were just technically wrong -- like principal components analysis without recentering. Global warming isn't a hoax, it's the more probable hypothesis right now -- whereas in the 80s the Big Freeze was the more probable hypothesis. And there are many reasons to demand a world with less fossil fuel oil consumption and cleaner air.
Robin Herrick I can't take you seriously if you don't know how to spell the stuff you're complaining about.

Jerame Carnagey so doesn't that mean the only acceptable option is to say yes and use protection? Yea loopholes!
Lesly Clarke-Matter In typical male fashioin, you are missing the point, Jerame.
Daniel McClellan How is missing the point "in typical male fashion"? I'm pretty sure it's in either "doesn't understand" or "thinks one is being overly clever" fashion, which can happen to people of either gender. Also, I'm going to nerd snipe myself here and say that it should be the "KobAyashi Maru".
Lesly Clarke-Matter The point is, we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. Regarding, "typical male" I guess you don't like to be stereotyped either...another point this message is trying to make. I looked it up and it IS the KobAyashi Maru (I too, love Star Trek, I don't think you are a nerd!).
Daniel McClellan I understand it fine, but for the benefit of people like Jerame, maybe there is a way to work in something about those same kinds of social stigmas attached to women who carry condoms, or the issue of men who claim they "don't feel natural". Although there isn't a whole lot of space in the picture for that much additional text....
"So perhaps in another hundred years or so, Americans will start to 'get' evolution. But it might take longer: apparently 18% of Americans still believe that the sun revolves around the earth. So it’s taken us 500 years to get to 80% for that one."
48 likes 15 comments 48 repins
Monica Clem I think the dip in belief in evolution among the older folks is probably due in part to the strong science supporting it coming out after they had already formed their beliefs. Now, young people are taught that there are different theories as well as scientific fact. I don't think old people are just dumb!
Donna Starnes Sorry, but I didnt evolve. I was born
Al Salmon Comments say it all reallt....
Douglas Ludens Wait, are you saying the sun _doesn't_ revolve around the earth?!
Roberta Uskoski I don't know how people can't believe in evolution. Not knowing the true definition maybe? Dictionary.com says evolution is "change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift." Nowhere in that do they mention anything about monkeys becoming humans. Also, this definition is only the biology definition. Not only living things evolve. Evolution is as simple as airplanes or cars. Compare the first one to the ones we have now. That is evolution. :)
