"The first instant messaging client I remember using was called BroadCast, in the early 1990s. It was a Mac chooser extension, meaning you launched it using the application you used to select a printer. It ran over AppleTalk, was completely peer-to-peer, LAN-only (of course), and you didn’t have to add people to your buddy lists — if you had the BroadCast chooser extension, your name showed up in everybody else’s list and you could send and receive messages."

Nanex / i don't know what this means / but it's beautiful / "This also brings another example of the dangers of placing a blind, mindless emphasis on speed above everything else. Algos reacting to prices created by other algos reacting to prices created by still other algos. Somewhere along the way, it has to start with a price based on economic reality. But the algos at the bottom of the intelligence chain can't waste precious milliseconds for that."

Evolving Virtual Creatures by Karl Sims. Sims presents a system for evolving virtual creatures in a simulated three dimensional physical world. The creatures’ bodies and the rules that govern their behavior change over generations of reproduction based on various criteria for survival. The criteria are chosen in such a way that walking, swimming, jumping and other behaviors evolve. The creatures’ shapes and “neural circuitry” are represented as directed graphs.

Timo Ryttäri What's with the "it's CGI, not real"? I think thats quite blatantly obvious in this particular picture, but why should the method be taken almost as an insult as some of the comments imply? Now if this were a heavily edited photo should we regard this differently as the intent was clearly to produce as lifelike end result as possible? Technical merits aside despite the method this image would be and is just one of your standard issue "tits & arse" pics floating around the net.

Jacopo Rumi Hi, All. It takes a bit of time but if you post interesting things, people will come. Besides, I have always been wary of people with bazillions of 'friends' on FB. On G+ you usually have less but much more substantial relations. I happened to know new people too because of that. Google+ is more about shared interests than minding other people's business. And, finally, G+ is proving a valuable tool for my company. In my opinion, Google got it right fulfilling the emerging need for corporate communication and social networking. What do you think ?
Jacopo Rumi ...see this: https://lh5.googleuserconte... (I'm going to create a suitable board to pin it )
J.A. Pak Apparently, Google+ is much more popular outside the US. Explains the sudden explosion of followers I've been getting. Google+ is really more like a micro blogging tool where ideas and videos are better shared than at FB. And more easier to use than Tumblr.
Matias Lehtoranta It certainly isn't catching on in Finland. Mostly because Facebook got here first and so everyone keeps saying "all my friends are on Facebook". No one has any need to go to Google+.
Jacopo Rumi You are right, Matias, to point out the 'snowball effect' and the existence of geographical preferences. Still I'm surprised that nobody wasn't just annoyed by FB or needed something more complete. We use G+ quite a bit in our company, if nothing else for the video hangouts feature: we do meetings, training and webminars with it. Photo sharing is so much better with G+ / Picasa that I don't see any possible reason to use anything else. Moreover, I'm struck with the patience of FB users with the mobile application...

"Rorqual whales capture much of their food by an extraordinary procedure known as lunge feeding. When a rorqual comes across prey, it accelerates through the water and open its mouth. As it does so, its mouth fills with water, suspended within which are the tiny animals that the whale wants. The amount of water that flows into the whale can more than double the creature’s weight, and to accommodate it, blubbery pleats under the lower jaw expand, just as an accordion grows as it fills with air."

Neil Gaiman: Commencement Speech: "Looking back, I've had a remarkable ride. I'm not sure I can call it a career, because a career implies that I had some kind of career plan, and I never did. The nearest thing I had was a list I made when I was 15 of everything I wanted to do: to write an adult novel, a children's book, a comic, a movie, record an audiobook, write an episode of Doctor Who... and so on. I didn't have a career. I just did the next thing on the list."

Dirk Aßmann-Staudt As a german I allways wonder about how touchy some Americans are about religion. Unrelaxed that is. Plus intorlerant. A country where they try to establish creationism instead of biology in school. Best comment here in my eyes is: "God created evolution." Since at some point science is as much a believe as any religion we all could be just relaxe and try to lead a respectfull, tolerant and openminded life towards every human and nature.
Sylvia Droz 'God created evolution'. That could've happened. I don't get how the Christians can believe that their God is all powerful, all knowing, can do everything and anything but yet the thought that god might've created evolution is like blasphemy?! The story of creation was in the bible. God inspired the bible. God did not write the bible. Man wrote the bible and man is not perfect or exempt from sin. Who knows maybe God was like 'Story of creation, GO!' and the man was like 'Hmmm i want us to be created in 6 days, sounds good!" .. in the end, we don't know how things went from nothing to something. No body really knows so why not share and examine theories together rather than fighting
