Profile picture of John Rakowski

John Rakowski Dani/Xasha, I read about these photos almost a year ago, I remember that this satellite had used a different type of lens that captured light more differently. I believe they did it like this for whatever original purpose the satellite was intended for. Here is a quick quote: "a combination of visible and near-infrared wavelengths, so that vegetation shows up in red, rather than the green you might expect. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...;

Profile picture of Nderna Naughd

Nderna Naughd Notice how the image was taken on January 4. Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we call that "winter." Not too many plants live through that time. Also, notice the coastal and southern regions have greenery. That's because those areas have different climates. Amazing how all that land between New York and L.A. is so unknown to most people.

"Astronauts were able to use unmanned satellites and space stations to capture the incredible lights coming from thousands of settlements along the banks of The Nile, in Egypt. Even though parts of the country have yet to receive electricity or running water, the twinkling lights show how many people have set up their homes along the river. Just a few miles from the glowing snakes is the darkness of the practically uninhabited deserts that lay beyond." / via @straup

In 1960, Joe Kittinger flew 30km straight up into the sky using a pressurized, high-altitude balloon. This very nearly made him the first man in space. He then jumped. Kittinger free-fell for over twenty kilometers – at which point he was moving so fast he broke the sound barrier. He had all but left the earth's atmosphere; the sky around him was pitch black; he could see the outlines of entire continents; and the haiku-like abstraction of his available reference points – earth, balloon, space – made it impossible to tell if he was really falling. Luckily, there's a film : video.google.com/...

Nderna Naughd The fastest a freediver can travel toward Earth is about 200 mph. The speed of sound is 768 mph. It is also worth noting that the official distinction between outer space and Earth's atmosphere is 100km above sea level.

Aaron Compton Look at that trench that starts down here by NZ, and the way the boundary line curls around Fiji. Things are complicated down here...you can just see the line of underwater volcanoes parallel to the trench--when that line hits the North Island they stop being underwater...
