What I always love about Silverstein is how much emotion he can provoke in just a few simple pen strokes and words. The sparse story means it can be interpreted in a variety of ways. I've read several mixed reviews of this book. Is this a sweet example of sacrificial love? Is this a short tale of a codependent relationship? How do you respond? I think I lie on the side of this is a book about love. Sometimes love doesn't make sense. Sometimes love requires sacrificing a lot of yourself. And sometimes, from an outsider's perspective, it's not worth it. Sometimes it looks a little unhealthy. On the other hand, this could be like The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, where he explained the deeper meaning by saying, "The old man is an old man. The fish is a fish. The boy is a boy." Sometimes a tree is a tree.
