Kathak dancers combine traditional Indic and Middle Eastern traditions in a way that can be strikingly reminiscent of its cousin dance, flamenco, on occasions. The twirling of kathak may in part be inspired by Sufism and the influence of the Whirling Dervishes in other parts of the Islamic world.

While Kathak does not belong to Carnatic dance,songs and music styles, Mohini Attam does, but steps differ in each style. In these pictures you can see different traditional Indian dance poses. Devadasis , temple dancers, were performing nritta and abhinaya for gods in the temples, as we see from the paintings. They learnt "Indian dance" at classical classes the history of mudras (hasthas).
