The Truth About Fat

Lazy. Stupid. Worthless. From news media and magazines to professional conferences and government reports, these are the words often used to describe overweight and obese individuals. The endorsements of such stereotypes often lead to extreme weight loss practices which can induce feelings of guilt and shame. Despite the robust research demonstrating the negative impacts of weight-based discrimination, the stigma of obesity has yet to be addressed as a legitimate concern. Shift the Focus ques...

Dear OP, This is my body. Keyword being ‘my’. And you know what? You do not have the right to sexualize any part of it without my permission and that includes my breasts. This isn’t porn. This isn’t sexual. This is my body and I’m not going to be ashamed of it just because you think I should be. My body is not indecent. My body is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and incredibly flawed and natural and modified and a lot of silly and subjective things but most important my body is MINE and will always be so. Take your slut-shaming elsewhere.

“I remember when I was doing Rent and I was too thin, and I was doing that on purpose because I’m dying, I’m a HIV+ drug addict. I remember having to eat raw food and doing all this work to make sure I could stay thin… And I remember everyone asking me when I was doing press for the movie, “what did you do to get so thin? You looked great!” and I’m like, “I looked emaciated.” It’s a form of violence in the way that we look at women and how we expect them to look and be, for… what’s sake? Not health, not survival, not enjoyment of life, but just so that you can look ‘pretty’. I’m constantly telling girls all the time, “everything’s airbrushed, everything’s retouched, to the point of just that it’s never even asked, and none of us look like that.” - Rosario Dawson

"Fat people who love themselves scare the shit out of people who don’t love themselves. Even fat people who are TRYING to love themselves scare the shit out of people who can’t do the same. We force people to have to look at why they hate their bodies because we are 'supposed' to hate ours and we don’t. And sometimes they have no idea what to do with that, so they act like assholes." - Tigress Osborn

Fat acceptance doesn’t simply advocate in favor of fatness. Fat acceptance is also about rejecting a culture that encourages us to rage and lash out at our bodies, even to hate them, for looking a certain way. It’s about setting our own boundaries and knowing ourselves, and making smart decisions about how we live and treat ourselves, and ferociously defending the privacy of those choices. It’s about promoting the idea that anything you do with your body should come from a place of self-care and self-love, not from guilt and judgment and punishment. It’s about demanding that all bodies, no matter their appearance or age or ability, be treated with basic human respect and dignity. That’s the world I’d like to build. For all of us. — Lesley Kinzel, Why the World Needs Fat Acceptance (via adrowningwoman)

ideas of beauty and sexuality are "culture bound"—that these ideas are not universal or fixed, and that they vary and fluctuate depending on place and time. They will tell you that too many people suffer because the body they live in is not the body you find in the fashion magazines. ~ Leonard Nimoy

HOW NOT TO HATE BEING PHOTOGRAPHED Sometimes, seeing an unflattering photograph of yourself can hit you like a punch. We’ve all had this experience, when our comfortable self-image is shattered by a photograph that looks nothing like what we expect. You can get over it!

"The lie of virginity - the idea that such a thing even exists - is ensuring that young women's perception of themselves is inextricable from their bodies, and that their ability to be moral actors is absolutely dependent on their sexuality. It's time to teach our daughters that their ability to be good people depends on their being good people, not on wether or not they're sexually active. ~ Jessica Valenti" #feminism #equality

Do you know who that picture is of? That’s Marilyn Monroe. She's considered one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her pants size, was a size 9. She had CURVES. We all worry about our pants size and our weight when, in reality, why should we care? Who is it that says we should care? Why not live our lives for ourselves and be happy instead of counting meaningless calories? Love yourself, be free, be happy and be healthy!

Great group of weight gain ads. A good reminder that our current beauty standards, which promote weight loss and thinness, are actually pretty recent. It wasn’t so long ago that skinny was a considered a bad thing, and gaining weight to be curvier was what was being marketed to women.
