School Snack Ideas

I haven't meet a kid yet who doesn't love grape tomatoes. Did you know your kids can snack on an entire cup for less than 50 calories? In addition to being loaded with vitamin C, tomatoes offer up a big dose of lycopene (an antioxidant associated with low rates of cancer and heart disease).

Looking to put a little sunshine in your kids lunch? While oranges would work, dried apricots may make school lunches a little more interesting. High in beta-carotene, apricots offer up a great antioxidant boost. (Beta-carotene converts to vitamin A in your body and helps develop and maintain healthy teeth, bones and skin.) Gotta love healthy snacks that taste good too!

If curry is a popular seasoning in your household, you may want to whip up this Curried Snack Mix and have it on hand for packing in school lunches (without the nuts) and have extra ingredients on hand to whip up a quick batch for gift giving or entertaining.

Rainbow Chips & Dip - It's a snap to make your own chips using colorful whole-grain tortillas. This fresh pineapple salsa beats bottled dip any day. Both the chips and salsa can be made ahead for anytime snacking.

Biscotti Gone Bananas - If your kids like banana bread, they'll love these crispy biscotti strips. Keep them in a tightly sealed container and they'll stay fresh for up to a week.

Trail Mix - Loaded with protein and fiber, this trail mix has enough fuel to energize your child until dinnertime. Dried fruits and chocolate chips make it a kid favorite.

Almonds & Walnuts - Pack pre-portioned baggies of this super-healthy snack in your desk, bag, or car for easy munching. Almonds are rich in healthy fats that keep you feeling full; plus, they're packed with heart-healthy minerals like potassium and magnesium and bone boosters like phosphorus and calcium. Walnuts contain omega-3s, fatty acids known to reduce inflammation, boost "good" cholesterol levels, and even make your complexion more glowy.

Soy Crisps - If you can't eat just one, consider switching from potato or tortilla chips to soy crisps. A huge 140-calorie-ish portion generally packs only 2 grams of fat and as much as 10 grams of healthy soy protein, depending on the brand. So you can munch away and feel like you're eating a ton without any guilt about the grease factor.

Cereal - Divvy up a serving of your favorite flakes into little baggies for a stand-alone crunchy snack. Most cereals are fortified with essential nutrients like folic acid and other vitamins and minerals; your healthiest bets are also low in added sugar, high in fiber, and made with heart-healthy whole grains, like MultiGrain Cheerios, Product 19, Kashi GoLean, Fiber One Honey Clusters, Raisin Bran, and Quaker Oatmeal Squares.

Oatmeal - What kid doesn't love cookies for snack time? Instead of buying the high-sugar, high-fat varieties from the store, bake up a batch of our low-fat Oatmeal Cookies and feel better about serving cookies and milk. The best part is you can add in whatever you want -- try raisins, cranberries, dried apricots, or nuts to boost the nutritional value and taste.

Snack Mix - Toss together a healthy combo of nuts, pretzels, whole grain cereal, banana chips, and popcorn for a handy, portable snack. Nuts contain must-have minerals such as magnesium, iron, and zinc. Try our kid-friendly Nutty Popcorn and Fruit Mix, or make up one of your own yummy combinations!

Sweet Potatoes - Sweet spuds are some of the most nutritious vegetables around: They're packed with vitamin A and are good sources of B6, C, and folate. These simple, delicious chips are great alternatives to the greasy, store-bought variety.

The protein in this kid-friendly snack keeps energy levels high until dinnertime. We like to stick salt-free pretzel sticks into cubes of low-fat cheese to make "satellite snacks," but you can also make cheese more interesting to kids by cutting it into fun shapes with a cookie cutter and making kabobs with your favorite fruit.
