2011 Texas Wild Fires

"Hot Shot" crews from Nevada get some much needed (and much deserved) sleep Wednesday (4/27) night camped out next to their truck near the Observatory's firehouse while others continue to monitor and work the latest burn-off lines along Hwy 118 near the Observatory. Fort Davis Rock House fire started 4/9 contained 5/3/2011. Black Mountain burning. Look just above the Hobby•Eberly Telescope dome ... the bright line on the right is the wildfire which broke through a burn-out line on Sunday afternoon. The bright line on the left is the front of a back-fire set to stop that portion of the wildfire. Silhouetted by the back-fires on Black and Spring (to the left) Mountains is Guide Peak now with only small pockets of active fires. (Credit: Frank Cianciolo/McDonald Observatory)
