This jewellery case is decorated with beadwork, a popular embroidery technique in the 17th century, in which tiny glass beads were threaded in sequence and sewn into place. The padded central panel lifts open to show a compartment for jewellery, lined with pink taffeta. The quality of glass beads and other material, and the involvement of a cabinet-maker in making the beadwork up into such a box, would mean that it could only be made within a household which could afford such outlay. Kaos onto Kaos Birds
late 19th century - early 20th century (made). Cotton, with freehand paste-resist decoration (tsutsugaki), and quilted in cotton stitches (sashiko). The motif of a dragon, a magical beast who brought storms when it descended from the heavens, served to wrap the fireman in divine protection. The jacket is reversible, and during a fire the plain side would be revealed. When the fire had been defeated - and on festival days - the dynamic image would be revealed.Victoria & Albert Museum
The reuse and recycling of materials to create modern, ethically responsible objects became an important trend within British design in the 1980s. Deborah Thomas's ‘Northern Fleet’ chandelier, which is constructed from shards of broken glass, is a spectacular example of this movement.
