Weather: Fill the cup with water. Put shaving cream on top for a cloud. Explain that when clouds get really heavy with water, it rains! Then put blue food coloring on top of the cloud, and watch it rain. Such a cool idea!

Tamani Percell Looks like how they teach it in RightStart math. Also reminds me of the "pie chart" method we used to memorize formulas in 9th grade science (Torque= Force x Radius, Force = Mass x Acceleration, etc)

Hannah Laurenson As long as students understand the reasoning behind the "shortcut," then it may be helpful; make sure they know they are finding equivalent fractions. It's awfully cute! (6 yrs teaching math)
Jessica Lindsay I'm with Hannah - shortcuts can be great, but you have to make sure they understand why they're doing what they do!
Allyson Klaus Compared to first finding the least common denominator, this method would require students to have to simplify in many cases.
