During the 1860s, cowboys wore flat-heeled boots that were standard Civil War issue. These boots gave way to the cavalry boot, which boasted a higher heel and wood pegged soles. Around 1880. C.H. Hyer, of Olathe, Kansas offered custom-made boots to the cowboy trade. Hyer was the first boot maker to build on left and right lasts; earlier boots were made on straight lasts, with no difference between left and right.
