Heidi Sentivan From Sarah Richardson. It looks like simple 1x1 square spindles, spaced at about 3" on center (closer than required by code). I think the spacing is what helps it feel substantial.
Hmm, this seems like an easy/inexpensive way to get the beam look?

Heidi Sentivan It looks like it is a 1x8 or 1x10 piece of mdf. Then they are also using a beadboard sheet material and some simple crown molding. The mdf boards are inexpensive and should be pretty easy to install. Basically glue and screws (to the ceiling/floor joists).

JoAnn Kirk I like this high fireplace. Makes sense and you really do not need a hearth with a gas fireplace. A hearth can be restrictive.

Switchback stair w/ paneling. You could add simple 1x2 mdf boards vertically to the drywall and achieve this look.
