The Rolling Bridge was conceived by British designer Thomas Heatherwick. The bridge consists of eight triangular sections hinged at the walkway level and connected above by two-part links that can be collapsed towards the deck by hydraulic cylinders. When extended, it resembles a conventional steel and timber footbridge. To allow the passage of boats, the hydraulic pistons are activated and the bridge curls up until its two ends join, to form an octagonal shape.

The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian and cyclist tilt bridge spanning the River Tyne in England between Gateshead's Quays arts quarter on the south bank, and the Quayside of Newcastle upon Tyne on the north bank. The award-winning structure was conceived and designed by architects Wilkinson Eyre and structural engineers Gifford. The bridge is sometimes referred to as the 'Blinking Eye Bridge' or the 'Winking Eye Bridge' due to its shape and its tilting method.

Go Travel That's a brilliant water reflection, caught on camera!
Not a typical design for Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Peace Bridge in Calgary, Canada, was inaugurated at the end of this past March. A red twisting helix-shaped pedestrian bridge, the Peace Bridge is a low single-span bridge without Calatrava’s usual soaring vertical accents because of a no-fly zone above due to a nearby heliport. via flickr

Alamillo Bridge by Calatrava. A single pylon inclines away from the river and supports the 200 meter span with thirteen pairs of stay cables. As Alexander Tzonis explains," Rather than use back stays, Calatrava allowed the weight of the concrete-filled steel pylon to counterbalance the deck. By substituting one set of stay cables with the weight of the pylon inclined at 58 degrees, he created a new kind of cable-stayed bridge"

The Millau Viaduct is one cable-stayed road bridge that aims to impress. It’s the 12th highest bridge in the world and the world’s number one tallest bridge with a single mast height of 343m (1,125 feet) – that’s taller than the Eiffel tower! British architect, Norman Foster and French structural engineer, Michael Virlogeux worked together to design this autoroute that stretches from Paris to Montpellier
