Plywood. Paint the front whatever color you want. Once it's dry use a paint pen or paint to write a quote. Cut scrapbooking paper and modge podge it on. Modge podge over everything, two coats. Hot glue a metal binder clip on the scrapbook paper.

Doodle some owls on toilet paper rolls, or get out a bunch of craft supplies and go to town with color and glitter, great as ornaments or place cards
