Waving Girl Statue Savannah GA The Waving Girl statue was made in honor of Florence Martus. It can be found on River Street in Savannah, Georgia. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Florence greeted the passing ships that went to the Savannah Port. She greeted them by waving a cloth during the day, and she used a lantern during the night. Some people say she wanted to be the first to meet her husband, as he returned to port. She really was just lonely and friendly. Florence was the Tybee Island lighthouse keeper’s sister. She was born on Cockspur Island in 1868. She began waving in 1887. She stopped waving in 1931. She waved for forty years. It was said that she never missed a ship. She died in 1943. The Altrusa Club had the statue made in her honor in 1972. The statue was made and designed by Felix de Weldon. Florence Martus is buried in Laurel Grove Cemetery, in Savannah.
