Last summer, my mother and I explored the villages along the Route des Vins of Alsace. We found that anywhere flowers could be planted, they grew. I found colorful half-timbered houses with windows that overflowed with geraniums, rolling hills of what seemed to be endless vineyards, patisseries and boulangeries along the cobblestone streets, ancient church bells ringing daily at noon, and castles looking over every village.
